A Patriotic Mule

Want to show your colors, without giving up your style? Even if you don’t celebrate the Fourth of July, you’ll want to indulge in this Moscow mule variation. Muddled blueberries and watermelon add a sweet tart flavor that compliments the ginger heat. Served with ice in a copper mug, it’s excellent to enjoy in summer.

What you’ll need:

  • ¼ cup of blueberries
  • 2 slices of watermelon
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ lime
  • 1 cup of ginger beer
  • 1-2 oz. shot of vodka

Step 1: Muddling

Ingredients:

  • 4-7 fresh blueberries
  • 2-3  small cubes of watermelon
  • ½ tsp of sugar
  • 1 half of the juice of a lime (fresh squeezed preferred)

Preparation:

If you own a muddler, muddle the ingredients in the bottom of a copper mug. If you don’t, a small mortar and pestle will do the trick.

 Step 2: Mixing

Ingredients:

  • Muddled sweet fruit
  • 1-2 oz. shot of vodka
  • 1 cup ginger beer
  • Ice

Preparation:

Pour the vodka and ginger beer into the muddled fruit in your mug, and stir (perhaps using a copper straw?) Add ice to the mug and garnish with a small wedge of watermelon (green rind peeled off) and a small skewer of blueberries.

Want to add a twist? Add sweet basil to the muddle mixture, and to the garnish.
